Overhead Door's Mullion System:
MetLife Stadium Case

The Overhead Door Company of The Meadowlands & NYC has had the honor of working on several interesting, yet challenging projects. One of the more unique locations is the home of our two hometown NFL teams--the Giants & Jets. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, is an impressive structure that not only serves as a football stadium, but is also used for concerts and other events.

There was one major problem with the stadium, however. It had no opening that was large enough to allow Monster trucks to drive into the facility. Monster truck rallies are huge events that attract big crowds, so being able to utilize the stadium for this purpose is a big deal! Luckily, those in charge decided to call us and see if we could help solve this problem.

Monster Truck

Previously, there was a situation where the current doors were neither tall enough or wide enough to drive these massive vehicles into the stadium. Since the rallies are infrequent events, it was not possible to simply take out the adjacent doors, and no "out-of-the-box" solution was available.

Some creativity was needed in creating a custom solution for this situation. Essentially, we removed the two rolling doors that already existed and instead installed two individual 8' x 14' RSX rolling steel 625 series doors. In addition to the doors themselves, we installed an intermediate mullion. If both doors are placed in the up position, the mullion can be disengaged and rolled away to create the 16' x 14 opening needed for those large monster trucks.

While this was a custom solution, it was completed using Overhead Door Company parts. The only parts we fabricated ourselves were the steel floor plates to perfectly engage the cane bolts of the mullion. The powers-that-be at the stadium were very happy with the overhead door we created and we have since used this in other situations.

This video shows you how the installed Mullion System works:

This door is a simple, streamlined solution that opens up a number of possibilities for Metlife Stadium--including making it easier to bring in the sets and supplies needed for an event as large as the 2014 Super Bowl.

Rolling Steel Doors or Sectional Doors: Which One's Better?

Posted by Wendell Daguno on Jul 3, 2020 3:55:00 PM

You just moved into a new facility and noticed that your overhead door needed replacement.  You searched the internet for the best commercial overhead door provider in the area and a lot of companies appeared then realized that you also have the option to choose either a rolling door or a sectional door. But which one is better? A rolling garage door or a sectional garage door? Which among the providers is the best? This article will help you with your choices and enlighten you about the differences between a rolling door and a sectional door.

Although they are sometimes considered to be interchangeable, there are dramatic differences between Rolling Steel Doors and Sectional Doors. Some of these differences are based on materials, durability, installation, and pricing. But before we come to a conclusion of which one’s the better option, let’s take a look at these differences.

- Rolling Steel Doors
Also known as coiling doors, and roll-up doors

Rolling steel doors are metal slatted doors that roll up to store in coil above the opening. They are used to provide security against entry or weather protection at exterior and interior openings in industrial, commercial, institutional, and other buildings. They are also called overhead coiling doors or service doors while sectional garage doors are normally made from much lighter gauge materials. For example, the 24” tall panels are typically 24 gauge or nominal 24 gauge, where rolling steel curtains are made of individual 3” tall slats of 22 to 18 gauge material. The guides of a commercial sectional garage door are typically roll-formed 16 or 14 gauge, where rolling steel guides are typically made from 3/16” to 1/2” thick structural steel angles.

Heavy-duty commercial/industrial rolling steel doors are built to last the lifetime of the building with very little cost of maintenance, where sectional garage doors typically have a life expectancy of only a few years with significant maintenance costs.

- Sectional Steel Doors

Sectional doors may cost less than rolling steel doors but over time, heavy-duty rolling steel doors may save more as you will have to spend less service and maintenance on them.

Sectional garage doors typically float up and overhead into the building while heavy-duty rolling steel doors/roll-up doors are mounted to the face of the wall and supported by the vertical wall and require no connection to the ceiling or roof structure. Sectional garage doors are typically mounted to the vertical face of the wall, but the horizontal track must be supported from the ceiling or roof structure.

Conclusion:

Rolling steel doors are of a heavier duty and sustainable construction. Also, rolling steel doors have mounting advantages that make them uniquely suitable for specific applications. Although they cost more money, they will last longer than a sectional steel door and will need less maintenance if used properly.

Benefits of Installing a High-Speed Door

Benefits of Installing a High-Speed Door

Your rolling service doors are some of the most used and most underappreciated pieces of equipment in your facility. Every business has different needs and expectations when it comes to service doors, parking garage doors, or other types of overhead doors. Some businesses need a door that fits in with a particular architectural style, some companies value security and still others require a temperature-resistant overhead door. However, another important need is the need for speed.

High-Speed Doors

A high-speed door is a great investment for many facilities. Faster opening and closing times on high-speed doors can make a facility more secure, reduce heating or cooling loss and prevent airflow, which can damage certain merchandise. In addition, when you are not stuck waiting for a slow door to open and close, you save time that you can use for other more important tasks around your property.

Our high-speed doors offer the perfect balance between speed, high performance, durability and style.

Choosing the right service door for your structure is a big decision, but a high-speed door can be the ideal solution in many cases.

When it comes to all your door needs, you are never alone. If you have any further questions on high-speed doors or other types of service doors and accessories, call The Overhead Door Company of the Meadowlands & NYC. One of our experts will be happy to discuss your needs and help you choose the right solution for your business.

A Quick Guide to Loading Dock Seals

Posted by Overhead Door Expert on Nov 27, 2019 4:11:00 PM

Your loading dock is a bustling place--orders coming in, shipments going out--there is always something happening. No matter how well-built your loading dock is, there is likely some issue you face that could go a little bit smoother. That’s when accessories like dock seals come into play.

What are Loading Dock Seals?

Loading dock seals are an important way to protect your structure, trucks and shipments. A seal provides a tight closure between the truck and your loading dock. This keeps temperatures consistent and keeps insects, dampness and other things out of your building. If you have a particularly delicate load, this can be vital.

What’s the Difference Between Dock Seals and Dock Shelters?

Dock Seals can provide an airtight seal--where as a dock shelter is not quite as tight. However, since the seal is airtight, it does require a bit more attention to the size of the truck and the dock--there is less flexibility. Using a loading dock leveler may make it easier, depending on the situation at hand. When everthing comes together and fits, a dock seal provides the best possible protection to your most important loads.

Are There Other Accessories?

Here at The Overhead Door Company of the Meadowlands and NYC, we carry a huge selection of the loading dock accessories you need. From these seals and shelters that protect loads from changing temperatures and moistures to dock bumpers that prevent damage to your trucks and structure, we have exactly the loading dock equipment you need to keep your loading dock operating at its best.

Whether you decide that a dock seal is an important addition to your structure or not, what is important is maintenance and servicing loading docks regularly. We can help you with your maintenance needs--keeping your docks operating at their prime now and for years to come.

Dock Bumpers and Their Benefits

Posted by Overhead Door Expert on May 29, 2019 7:07:00 PM

No matter if you have a low traffic dock or a bustling hub of activity, there is always the risk of damage when a truck hits the building. Not only can it cause damage to the vehicle, but in the worst cases the building could sustain serious damage as well. One of the best ways to prevent this is with dock bumpers. In fact, dock bumpers can absorb around 80% of the impact force when there is trailer impact.

Since these are such an important line of defense, it is important that you choose the right type for the job.

Types of Dock Bumpers:

- Laminated Dock Bumpers have a mid-range of wear capacity and have flexibility in thickness, length and height.

- Steel Faced Dock Bumpers have the greatest wear capabilities—up to four times the protection of a laminated bumper. You can make your decision based on how busy your dock is, or how likely it is that there would be a collision involving any type of trailer or loading dock equipment.

- Molded Dock Bumpers are the most attractive style, but they are easier to chip or gouge than other types of bumpers.

One problem that can occur in some spaces happens when the trailer height does not match up against the natural height of the bumpers on the loading dock. Here at The Overhead Door Company of the Meadowlands & NYC, we have a solution.

We can create custom raised dock bumpers that will prevent damage to the trucks and the building. If this is something that occurs on your dock, give us a call or contact us and let one of our experts come out and work to find the right solution for you.

Remember, whether you need simple molded dock bumpers or require a more complex solution like raised dock bumpers, we are here for you. We care about your building and equipment and are happy to go the extra mile to make certain we find a solution that works for you.
