Fire Safety at Your Premises

Every year people die or are seriously injured as a result of fires in non-domestic properties. In many cases, businesses are not able to recover from the effects of fire as, besides the human risk, fire can cost millions of dollars due to property damage, products loss, fines, compensations and insurance premiums.

Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees by taking the right measures to prevent fires and reduce the risks in their premises.

The following Fire Risk Assessment will let you identify a specific range of protective measures that are appropriate for your premises.

  1. Identify the fire hazards
  2. Identify the people at risk
  3. Evaluate, remove, reduce and protect against fire risk
  4. Create an exit route and an emergency plan.
  5. Create a fire prevention plan, instruct, inform and train

Several passive fire protection measures may be necessary to limit and control the spread of the smoke or the spread of the fire. The following are some of the measures that need to be considered:

FIRE RATED DOORS, SHUTTERS & CURTAINS

Importance of Fire Door Drop Testing

Posted by Wilford Ordoñez on Aug 25, 2014 8:07:00 AM

Protecting your staff and yourself, is very important to you, of course. Luckily, there is one way you can offer protection without too much added work or stress on your part--having your fire doors drop tested. Testing your fire doors is incredibly important. Consider these four reasons why you need to make it a priority:

  • Safety of Your Staff and Vendors – A well-maintained door that passes our drop test will keep you and those who work around it safe—even in an emergency situation.
  • Long Life of the Door – Our fire door drop test will help find small problems that could turn into big ones. By finding and fixing these issues now, you will assure that the door lasts for years to come.
  • Government Compliance – There are certain requirements that you must meet to assure that you are doing what is necessary to protect your building and its occupants. Our test will make sure you meet the standards put in place by NFPA, IDA, IDEA and UL. This can prevent costly fines or even potential closure.
  • Insurance Requirements – Your private insurance company may have further requirements when it comes to testing your fire door. Our standard drop test will meet or exceed all of these. If not, we’ll work with you to make certain we come up with a solution that does.

Don’t put your business, staff and structure at risk. Scheduling a fire door drop test is easy. Call or contact us at the Overhead Door Company of the Meadowlands & NYC today. We’ll help arrange a time to take care of this important task and put your mind at ease.

Fire Rated Door

Types of Doors

Fire doors come in many different styles. For instance, we carry fire-rated counter doors that are ideal for use in areas where you only need a door to reach from the ceiling to the counter. Another popular option is fire-rated insulated rolling service doors. These allow you to maintain a consistent temperature inside your building, provide security and have that protection against fire. For a finished look, the integral frame & sill fire counter doors are another option.

How a Fire Door Protects You

So, why do you need a fire door? A fire door is designed to slow the spread of both, smoke and fire, from one part of your building to another. This can give you occupants of the building a chance to escape, and may also protect valuable equipment or merchandise from damage during a small fire. A fire door is superior to a standard door in protecting because it is made of multiple layers and is both, self-closing and self-sealing, in case of emergency.
