Types of Tracks for Commercial Garage Doors

Written by Overhead Door Expert | May 22, 2023 4:00:00 AM

The track is one of the most important components of a garage door system. The track partially supports the door's weight and ensures smooth, and steady movement whenever you open and close the commercial garage door.

Working on a new commercial garage door project? Learn about the different types of commercial tracks for overhead door systems/sectional doors, in order to choose the best one for your facility.

Make sure you consider the overhead door’s height during your design process. When possible, experts recommend designing your project in a way where a standard lift track can be installed, instead of a low-headroom track.

Different Types of Tracks for Commercial Garage Doors

- Standard Lift Track: It is the most common track used with commercial garage doors. The door height is relatively close to the ceiling of the building. Since it uses a vertical track anchored against the wall and a horizontal one adhered to the ceiling layout, when the door opens, it will lay mostly flat beneath it.

- Low-Headroom Track: This track is used where normal operation can not take place because there is not enough room between the top of the door and the ceiling, due to the short height.

- High Lift or Lift Clearance Track: This overhead door track is used where the door height is significantly lower than the ceiling height. The wall-anchored section of the track (or vertical) is extended, allowing the door to move vertically until it gets closer to the ceiling, where it curves back into the horizontal portion of the track, thus preventing the door tracks from generating an obstruction.

- Follow Roofline Track: This track is designed in such a way that the door will follow the pitch of the roof.  It can be used with standard or lift clearance tracks.

- Full Vertical Track: Ideal for areas with very high ceilings so the door can be stored vertically against the wall when in the fully open position. The most common applications are warehouses.
