How to Spot Broken Garage Springs Safely

A commercial overhead door that suddenly will not open can bring a loading area, service bay, or warehouse entrance to a stop. Knowing how to spot broken garage springs helps you respond quickly, protect employees, and avoid turning a repairable door problem into a safety incident or a longer operational delay.

Garage door springs carry the counterbalance force that allows a heavy overhead door to move with manageable effort. When a spring breaks, the door may look normal at first glance, but its weight, movement, and operator performance can change immediately. Do not attempt to force the door open or make a spring adjustment yourself. Commercial springs are under significant stored tension and require trained service technicians, proper tools, and the correct replacement parts.

What Garage Door Springs Do

Torsion springs are commonly mounted on a shaft above the door opening. As the door closes, cables and drums wind the springs, storing energy. That stored energy assists the operator and helps lift the door when it opens. Extension spring systems, more often found on lighter doors, stretch along the horizontal tracks and provide lifting assistance in a different way.

Either system is designed for a specific door size, weight, track arrangement, and cycle requirement. A spring that is broken, worn, incorrectly sized, or improperly adjusted affects more than convenience. It can strain the operator, damage cables or drums, cause an uneven door, and create a risk for anyone working nearby.

Signs of a Broken Garage Door Spring

The clearest sign of a broken torsion spring is a visible gap in the coil. A torsion spring typically separates by about two inches when it breaks. If you can safely view the shaft above the opening from the floor, look for a clean separation in one of the springs. Do not touch the spring, shaft, cables, or brackets to inspect it.

A door that will only lift a few inches and then stop is another common warning. The operator may start the opening cycle, but cannot overcome the door’s full weight without spring assistance. On some commercial or industrial garage doors, the operator may hum, strain, or shut off through its protection system. Repeatedly pressing the open button will not solve the problem and can place unnecessary stress on the operator.

You may also notice that the door closes unusually fast, slams down, or feels much heavier than usual during normal operation. A properly balanced door should not free-fall or require extreme force to move. If the door has a manual chain hoist, employees may report that it suddenly takes much more effort to raise.

Other signs can include a loud bang reported near the time of failure, loose or displaced lift cables, a door that rises crookedly, or gaps around the door because one side is not moving correctly. A bang alone does not confirm a broken spring. It could also come from a cable issue, roller failure, operator problem, or damaged track. Still, it is a reason to take the door out of service until it can be inspected.

How to Spot Broken Garage Springs Without Creating a Hazard

Start with observation, not hands-on troubleshooting. From a safe distance, look at the spring assembly above the door and the cables along both sides. Check whether the door is sitting level, whether a cable appears loose, and whether the tracks have visible damage. Keep people, forklifts, and other equipment clear of the opening while you assess the issue.

If the door is open or partially open, do not walk beneath it. A door with a failed spring or cable may not remain in position. Do not pull the emergency release on a powered commercial door unless a qualified technician directs you to do so and the door has been properly secured. Releasing an unbalanced door can allow it to fall quickly.

Avoid a few common responses that make a bad situation worse. Do not clamp or tie the spring assembly, remove a cable, loosen set screws, or add improvised weight to the door. Do not ask several employees to lift the door by hand. The door may be heavier than expected, and uneven lifting can damage tracks, panels, and hardware while putting the crew at risk.

If the opening is essential for deliveries or vehicle movement, contact a commercial door service provider and explain the door type, approximate size, current door position, and visible symptoms. This information helps the technician arrive prepared with appropriate springs, cables, tools, and access equipment.

Broken Spring or Another Door Problem?

A heavy or inoperable overhead door does not always mean the spring is broken. A power outage, failed operator, tripped disconnect, damaged photo eye, obstructed track, or control issue can also prevent movement. In those cases, the spring may still be intact.

Cable problems can closely resemble spring failure. If a cable has come off a drum or is frayed, the door may lift unevenly or become stuck. Because the cables work under tension with the spring system, this is not a safe repair for on-site staff. Bent tracks, broken rollers, and vehicle impact damage can also stop a door and create an unbalanced condition.

For facilities teams, the practical distinction is simple: if a door is heavy, uneven, makes unusual noises, or does not complete its travel, take it out of service and arrange a professional inspection. The exact cause matters for the repair, but the immediate safety response is the same.

What to Do When You Suspect a Spring Failure

Secure the area and notify the people who use the opening. If possible, redirect traffic to another door so employees are not tempted to operate the affected one. Mark the door as out of service and keep vehicles away from a partially open door.

Next, document what happened. Note the time, whether anyone heard a bang, the position of the door, and any recent changes in operation. A photo from a safe distance can help identify obvious damage, but never place yourself under the door or near the spring assembly to get a closer image.

Then schedule a professional repair. A qualified commercial door technician will verify the cause of the failure, secure the door, replace the correct spring or springs, inspect cables and drums, check hardware, and test door balance and operator function. Replacing only the visibly broken component without checking the rest of the system can leave the door vulnerable to another failure.

Why Commercial Springs Fail

Most springs eventually fail from normal cycle wear. Every open-and-close movement counts as a cycle, and high-traffic facilities can use a door many times each day. A spring installed for a lower cycle rating may wear out sooner in a busy warehouse, auto service center, or distribution operation.

Corrosion, moisture, lack of maintenance, improper spring sizing, and door imbalance can shorten spring life as well. A door that has been struck by equipment or has worn rollers and bearings may place additional load on the spring system. Cold weather can expose an already weakened spring, but temperature is rarely the only reason a properly maintained spring breaks.

There is a trade-off when selecting replacement springs. Standard springs may cost less initially, while higher-cycle springs can be a better value for frequently used commercial openings. The right choice depends on door weight, daily usage, operating environment, and the cost of downtime at your facility.

Spring failure cannot always be predicted, but regular inspections can catch contributing issues before they shut down an opening. During a commercial door maintenance visit, technicians can evaluate spring condition, cable wear, roller movement, track alignment, operator performance, safety devices, and door balance.
